Los escritores bien reelaboran motivos tradicionales o bien estos eran fruto de la originalidad literaria, aunque estuviera apoyada en elementos folclóricos. Ancien département (1960-1983) de la région naturelle de Casamance sous le président Léopold Sédar Senghor puis de la région de Kolda (1984-2007) sous son successeur Abdou Diouf, le département de Sédhiou, qui correspond à la Moyenne Casamance, est érigé (depuis 2008) en région administrative sous le président Abdoulaye Wade. La région couvre une superficie de 7300 km2 et est peuplée à 40% par l'ethnie mandingue, la composante majoritaire devant les Peulhs, les Balantes, les Diolas et autres.
Ainsi, elle est présente dans les anciennes provinces du Boudhié, du Diassing, du Pakao, du Sonkodou, du Balantacounda et du Souna. Les Mandingues de la région de Sédhiou pratiquent pour la plupart la religion musulmane et s'identifient par des prénoms essentiellement empruntés à l'islam. Mais à côté de ces prénoms musulmans, ils portent aussi des prénoms et des surnoms traditionnels tirés de leur fonds culturel et de la cohabitation avec d'autres ethnies (Baïnounks, Balantes, Diolas, Mancagnes, Mandjacques, Peulhs, Sarakholés, etc.).
Ces prénoms et surnoms ne sont pas neutres, ils sont porteurs d'une tradition familiale, sociale, religieuse, politique et historique et dépassent de simples appellations. L'étude s'est focalisée sur un échantillon de 1300 éléments et a révélé des résultats pertinents. En effet, si 70 % des prénoms sont constitués d'hommes, en revanche, 60 % des surnoms concernent les femmes. Parmi ces dernières, il y a le groupe des Dinba Jaasa qui est à l'origine de nombreuses créations de surnoms traditionnels.
